Earlier in the day, Shadow and Kaydee had briefly crossed paths as they flew toward the Lookout Snag and exchanged a short burst of eagle chatter. Afterward, they went their separate ways and appeared to spend much of the afternoon doing their own thing.
Then, at about 5:52 p.m., Shadow returned to the nest alone. And he stayed. For more than an hour, viewers were able to watch the adult bald eagle at close range. At times he simply stood quietly, surveyed the surroundings and settled into the place he has known for years.

The Cameras Gave Everyone a Long Look at Shadow
Shadow did not have to do much to hold everyone’s attention. The cameras moved in close enough to reveal the details that are easy to miss when he is perched high in one of the distant snags: the layers of dark feathers across his back, his brilliant white head, his powerful beak and the small movements that make an hour of watching an eagle somehow disappear quickly.
For longtime Big Bear viewers, however, there was another layer to the scene. This was Shadow alone in the nest. Only weeks ago, the same tree was still part of the daily life Shadow shared with Jackie and their family. Jackie’s death on August 10 changed the way many people experience even the most ordinary scenes at Big Bear. A quiet Shadow standing in the nest can now feel comforting and painful at the same time.
It is tempting to look at his movements and wonder what he might be thinking. But we cannot know. The cameras can show us where Shadow goes and what he does. Friends of Big Bear Valley officially began calling the banded eagle Kaydee on August 19 after previously identifying her by her band designation, KD1. The organization has continued to emphasize that nature will determine what comes next.
Tuesday offered another example of why so many eyes remain fixed on Big Bear. Shadow spent more than an hour in the nest. Then Kaydee came along almost immediately afterward. Coincidence? Familiar habitat? Another sign that she is becoming increasingly comfortable around Shadow’s territory? For now, the cameras give us the behavior. The answers will take longer.
Are Shadow and Kaydee Becoming a Pair?
